Molecular Internal Medicine

Matthias Barton, M.D.

Our main research interests are the pathogenesis and prevention of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Our clinical and research expertise also includes other chronic non-communicable diseases, such as arterial hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and chronic kidney disease. We are particularly interested in molecular mechanisms of chronic disease, including vascular, endothelial, renal factors, and the role of steroid hormones in health and disease. We also evaluate and test novel non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches to improve prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Since the inception of Molecular Internal Medicine 20 years ago, we have been continuously funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
