Molecular Internal Medicine

How to realize mentoring in medicine

More than 20 years ago I initiated a research program in molecular internal medicine for students of medicine and the life sciences at the Department of Medicine at the University of Zurich. Since its inception the program has attracted many medical students as well as scientists and physicians from outside hospitals and abroad. Molecular Internal Medicine goal was and is to improve scientific education in medicine and research, mentoring and guiding students, and preparing them for their careers. Students have the opportunity to present their work at international research conferences and to participate in the publications related to their dissertation work, some of them even as first authors. Consequently, theses and scientific publications were published in recognized international journals. Our graduate students and fellows received numerous awards and prizes in recognition of their work at scientific conferences around the world. Students and fellows were awarded prizes for outstanding theses by the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich and postdoctoral fellowships by the Swiss National Science Foundation as an appreciation of their scientific excellence. Our aim remains to actively support and foster the career development and mentoring of students, early-career physicians and researchers in medicine and the biomedical sciences.
